Curatorial Process

So Textual celebrates literary and artistic works that have had an outsized impact and transcend the times during which they were created. As we strive to understand how classic literature and texts within the canon shape the current cultural milieu, we are repeatedly confronted with language, narrative devices, and other elements that perpetuate stereotypes and do not reflect the liberal humanist values of So Textual. And yet, we believe it would be a mistake to consider these works anachronistically and negate their value altogether. Rejecting art does not solve problems of racism, sexism, homophobia, or other forms of bigotry. Herein lies the value of critique and nuance to understand how these texts have informed our intellectual thought and creative practices.

As we champion classic and vintage works, we are aware of the silencing of certain voices, as well as the lack of opportunities and platforms for certain people; namely, women, people of color, and the LGBTQI+ community. Titles in the canon, as well as in literary fiction of the 20th century and today, do not accurately reflect the world’s makeup. So Textual seeks out writers nationally and around the world that are forgotten, overlooked, or undiscovered and intends to bring a variety of works to readers. While our curations will, at times, reflect the same lack of diversity that has plagued the creative world for centuries, such an absence is poignantly felt and glaringly conspicuous, and we commit to expanding understandings of classic literature and the works that fall within that category.
